Do you have a celebratory occasion coming up and want to add something special? Something that expresses who you are? Do you want to give a gift that can’t be wrapped in a box with a pretty white bow?
What is it you want to say at this life event? Whatever it is…
Say it in a dance!
The end result is usually what people have in mind when they hire me to choreograph their dance. What they don’t realize is the time spent learning, rehearsing and refining their dance is where magic happens. There are moments during this process when time stands still. These moments happen in the journey of creating this personalized expression. Learning a dance is the gift of an experience you will carry with you forever. And your guests will have the gift of a memory that won’t collect dust! And while all of that is true, can I just say that dance is FUN?
Bride-Groom First Dance
The groom had been taught Basque dance since he was a little boy. He wanted to honor his heritage. His bride wanted to embrace her new family. We decided to edit a traditional Basque song at the end of the couple’s first dance. When the music started and the bride and groom broke into their Basque dance, the floor was immediately flooded with guests joining the couple in Basque dance!
It was teasing on this father’s part to often say “I’m not giving her away, she’s only on loan” to his future son-in-laws. So when it came time for the middle daughter’s wedding, this father asked us if there was a way to work that idea in. We replaced a lyric in the music with his mantra, the choreography reflected his sentiments at that exact moment and the message was clear to all in attendance. This close knit family shared their private ribbing with all in attendance that day.
It was an untraditional wedding but the love and commitment was very traditional. This couple wanted to express the blending of these two ideas. So, choreography that included 16 of their closest friends was the way this couple was brought before their family and friends to exchange their vows.
We have a prom and we don’t know how to dance! 7 high school couples got together and I gave them one lesson. It was a great way to teach them some basic swing dance moves, some turns and partnering skills. After that, each couple did on the spot improvisation with LOTS of laughter. (and I think the nervous awkwardness of going to the prom was lessened.)
“Leading up to our wedding day, we weren’t sure what to do about our first dance. We wanted to make it fun for our guests, so it was an easy choice when we came to Catherine for help. She helped us combine our two favorite songs into one, and she made us feel so comfortable and confident during our dance lessons. Plus, each time we met with her, we just had the best time. Looking back, we are so pleased we opted to have Catherine choreograph our first dance as a married couple. It is one of our most treasured moments of our wedding day, and we can’t thank Catherine enough for all the help and fun along the way.”

“I was referred to Catherine by another dance teacher. I didn’t know where to begin looking, let alone anything about dancing. My step-father and I wanted to have a lifelong memory of our wedding dance, so we wanted to do something out of the ordinary that allowed our personality to show through. We could not have been happier with Catherine, and Mike too for that matter. We made a lifelong friend and learned a lot along the way. Our dance was more than either of us could have hoped for and the memories that we will always have of that are irreplaceable. She was amazing and talented with a very sweet and laid back personality. She listened to our wants and goals and put them into motion. Not once did we ever question our decision to have her as our teacher. I can’t say enough positive things about her as a person, or our experience. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that we will always be thankful for.”
“My husband and I are very grateful for both Catherine and Mike. Not only was our dance beautifully choreographed and taught to us over the course of a few weeks, our music was also edited to seamlessly flow from our slow dance to our surprise Basque dance at the end. Catherine helped us integrate a very important part of my husband’s culture into our dance and helped make it one of the most unique, fun and important parts of our big day. His entire family got to enjoy our first dance and its cultural roots, and some even joined in which is exactly what we were hoping for. Catherine was wonderful to work with as she dealt with us with patience, kindness and an extreme knowledge for her craft. I have never danced in my life and felt confident when it was time to make our debut as newlyweds! We had a very large wedding and even though I was nervous to do the first dance, I felt very sure of myself because of how well Catherine had taught us the routine as well as how many times we had practiced with her. The most important part was how much fun we had both working with her and when the time came to do our first dance. Again, I could not be more satisfied with Catherine and am thankful for her expertise. It’s wonderful because every time I watch the video, it’s like I get to live our wedding day over again.”
